Swim pace calculator

Type the distance and the time of a swim. You get the pace per 100 m and per 100 yd (your swim split for each 100) and how long the common triathlon swims would take at it.

Quick answer: pace per 100 = time / distance x 100. 1500 m in 30:00 is 2:00 per 100 m, which is 1:49.7 per 100 yd. At that pace a 750 m sprint swim takes 15:00 and the 2.4-mile full-distance swim takes 1:17:15.

How to use it

Type a distance, choose metres or yards to match your pool, and enter the time as m:ss or h:mm:ss. The tool gives pace per 100 in both units, the time per 50 m or 25 yd length, and projected times for 400 m and the four standard triathlon swims. Use a continuous swim or a time trial; a session with rests between reps will give an optimistic number.

Worked example: yards to metres

You swim 1650 yd in a 25 yd pool in 27:30. That is 1,650 seconds over 1,650 yards, so exactly 1:40 per 100 yd. One yard is 0.9144 m, so the swim covered 1,508.8 m, and 1,650 / 1,508.8 x 100 = 109.4 seconds, or 1:49.4 per 100 m. A pace per 100 m always reads slower than the same pace per 100 yd: this conversion is why, before any difference in turns.

Pool against open water

Pool times include a push-off from every wall, which open water does not. Add sighting, waves and a course that may be longer than advertised, and race swims usually come out slower per 100 than pool sets. Use your pool pace as a starting point and adjust once you have a race or open water time trial of your own.

Questions

How do I calculate swim pace per 100 m?

Divide your time in seconds by the distance in metres and multiply by 100. 1000 m in 20:00 is 1,200 / 1,000 x 100 = 120 seconds, or 2:00 per 100 m.

How do I convert pace per 100 yd to per 100 m?

Divide by 0.9144. 1:40 per 100 yd is 100 / 0.9144 = 109.4 seconds, or 1:49.4 per 100 m.

How long will a 1500 m swim take at 2:00 per 100 m?

30:00. Fifteen lots of 100 m at 2:00 each.

What is a 1650 swim?

A 1650-yard freestyle swim: 66 lengths of a 25-yard pool, about 1,508.8 m. It is 1,508.8 m, a little short of a real mile.
