Rowing machine calorie calculator

Enter your average 500 m split (or watts) and how long you rowed. You get the calorie count the Concept2 monitor would show, and a version adjusted for your own body weight.

Quick answer: rowing at a 2:00 split per 500 m produces about 203 W. The Concept2 monitor counts that as about 997 Cal per hour, so 30 minutes shows about 499 Cal. Adjusted for a 160 lb rower, the figure is about 971 Cal per hour, or 486 for the half hour.

How the monitor gets from split to calories

Step one is power. Concept2 publishes the conversion on its watts calculator page: watts = 2.80 / pace cubed, with pace in seconds per metre. A 2:00 split is 120 / 500 = 0.24 s/m, and 2.80 / 0.24 cubed gives 202.5 W.

Step two is energy. The formula behind the monitor, as quoted from Concept2 staff on the Concept2 forum, is Cal per hour = 4 x 0.8604 x watts + 300. The 0.8604 turns watts into kcal per hour (one watt for an hour is 3,600 J, or 0.8604 kcal). The factor of 4 counts four units of energy burned for each unit of work at the handle, which is the same as assuming 25% efficiency. The 300 is a fixed background figure per hour that Concept2 staff described as an approximation. The forum thread is the source here, not an official concept2.com page, so treat it as the monitor's convention.

The body-weight problem, and the fix

The monitor has no idea what you weigh. Its fixed 300 Cal background matches a 175 lb rower (1.714 x 175 = 300). Concept2's own calorie calculator page gives the correction: true Cal per hour = monitor Cal per hour - 300 + 1.714 x your weight in pounds. A 200 lb rower at a 2:00 split comes out at about 1,040 Cal per hour; a 160 lb rower at about 971. Leave the weight blank if you only want the monitor number.

Splits at a glance (monitor figures, Cal per hour)

1:45 per 500 m: about 302 W and 1,341. 2:10: about 159 W and 848. 2:15: about 142 W and 790. 2:30: about 104 W and 657. Slower splits drop fast because power falls with the cube of speed.

Limits

  • The formula is a convention for the Concept2 monitor. Other rowing machines may compute calories differently and will not match.
  • Technique, stroke rate and fitness change how much energy a given split costs you personally.
  • Calories here are estimates, not a weight-loss forecast.

Questions

How many calories does rowing burn in 30 minutes?

At a 2:00 split the Concept2 monitor shows about 499 Cal. Adjusted for a 160 lb rower it is about 486; at 2:30 per 500 m the monitor shows about 328.

Is the rowing machine calorie count accurate?

It is a fixed formula that assumes a 175 lb rower and a set efficiency. Lighter rowers burn less than it shows, heavier rowers more. Use the weight field above to correct it.

How do I convert rowing split to watts?

Divide the split in seconds by 500 to get seconds per metre, cube it, and divide 2.80 by the result. A 2:00 split is about 203 W; 150 W is a split of about 2:12.6.

Why do calories on the rower drop so much at slower splits?

Power depends on the cube of pace, so a slightly slower split means much less power. Only the 4 x 0.8604 x watts part shrinks; the fixed 300 per hour stays.
