Running pace chart

A pacing chart with finish times for the mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon at every pace, per mile and per kilometre. Type any pace or speed above the chart to convert it.

Pace as m:ss (7:30) or decimal minutes (7.5); speed as a number.

Quick answer: at 10:00 per mile (6:13 per km, 6 mph) a 5K takes 31:04, a 10K 1:02:08, a half marathon 2:11:06 and a marathon 4:22:11.

Pacing chart per mile

Every 15 seconds from 5:00 to 16:00 per mile. Finish times assume the same pace from start to finish.

How the chart is worked out

Finish time = pace x distance. A mile is 1.609344 km, a 5K is 3.107 miles, a 10K 6.214 miles, a half marathon 13.109 miles and a marathon 26.219 miles. Speed in mph is 60 divided by the pace in decimal minutes: 10:00 per mile is 6.0 mph, and 6:00 per km is 10.0 km/h.

Real races rarely run at a perfectly even pace, and the same pace does not hold over longer distances. To see what a recent race says about a longer one, use the race time predictor; to plan each mile of a race, use the charts for the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon.

Reading a row for training runs

The finish columns are just as handy for runs that are not races. An easy run planned at 10:00 per mile means a 10K (6.2 miles) takes 1:02:08, which tells you whether it fits before work. A long run at 12:00 per mile covers the half marathon distance in 2:37:19. Which pace each kind of run should be comes from a recent race: the training pace calculator gives easy, marathon, threshold and interval paces, and this chart turns them into times.

Why the longer columns are optimistic

Each row assumes one pace held from start to finish, and nobody races a marathon at their 5K pace. At 8:00 per mile the chart shows 24:51 for a 5K and 3:29:45 for the marathon. A runner who actually races 5K in 24:51 is predicted at about 3:58:20 for the marathon by Riegel's formula. Read a row to see what a pace means; use the predictor to see what a race means.

Pace charts for the track

To use a row on a 400 m track, divide the mile pace by 4.023, because four laps fall 9.3 m short of a mile. 9:00 per mile is 2:14.2 per lap; 5:00 per km is exactly 2:00 per lap. The track pace chart gives 100 m to 1600 m times for every mile pace.

Mile or kilometre table?

Use the table that matches the device you check during a run. A watch set to kilometres beeps every km, so the per-km table is easier to follow; US road races are signed in miles. If you train in one unit and race in the other, find your row in one table and read its converted pace in the second column: 9:00 per mile sits beside 5:36 per km.

Treadmill speeds

The mph column (and km/h in the second table) is there for the treadmill: find the speed on the console and read the pace and finish times beside it. The treadmill pace chart goes in steps of 0.1 mph and adds incline. How far is each race? Race distances in miles and km lists them all.

Questions

What is 10 minute mile pace in km?

6:13 per kilometre, or 6.0 mph. A 5K at that pace takes 31:04.

What is 6 minute per km pace in miles?

9:39 per mile (360 seconds x 1.609344 = 579 seconds), or 6.2 mph.

What is an average running pace?

There is no reliable single average: it changes with age, sex, distance and training. Use your own race results with the training pace calculator rather than a population average.

What is a pacing chart?

Another name for a pace chart: a table that turns a steady pace into finish times or splits. This one covers every 15 seconds from 5:00 to 16:00 per mile and every 10 seconds from 3:00 to 10:00 per km.
